Rodman Ride for Kids

Saturday, September 29th, 2012, members of the PYD community will participate as Team PYD in the 22nd annual Rodman Ride for Kids event. The Ride for Kids is an umbrella matching gift charity raising funds for youth-focused social service agencies that support at-risk children in Massachusetts. The Ride serves as a catalyst by providing over 46 agencies an opportunity to raise funds through this event. Partners' opportunity to participate in the Rodman Ride is in part thanks to Mass Mentoring Partnership, the state's umbrella organization for youth mentorship. All funds raised by PYD will go directly to support PYD programs.

For the fourth year in a row, Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD) has dedicated friends who will complete the Rodman Ride for Kids to raise awareness and funds for PYD. Juan Martin Botero, PYD mentor and Cambridge resident, and William Connors, a PYD Board member and father of toddler twins, rode the 25-mile course in support of PYD last year. They will be joined this year by a first-timer and friend of PYD, Steve Taub.

Juan, a mentor through the Mentor Match program at Partners for Youth with Disabilities since 2009, was diagnosed as an adult with Ataxia, a neurological dysfunction that affects gross motor coordination. Not one to let a disability slow him down, Juan uses adaptive equipment such as his recumbent bike, the Greenspeed Tadpole, for cycling training and racing, as well as his daily commute from Cambridge to downtown Boston. By using specially designed equipment, staying in shape, and harnessing his determination, Juan has been able to climb to Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit and the bottom of the Grand Canyon. His dream is to climb Everest, and to inspire kids with disabilities to dream big.

For over twenty-five years, Partners for Youth with Disabilities, Inc. (PYD) has assisted youth with disabilities to meet their full potential and become confident contributing citizens of our community. PYD provides high quality one-on-one and group mentoring programs in which adult and peer mentors act as positive role models and provide guidance for youth ages 6 to 24 with a wide range of disabilities as they strive to reach their personal, educational and professional goals.

Donations will be accepted through October 15th, 2012. You may contact PYD at 617-556-4075 x 17 for more information.
