Why the GT3?
For some time people have been telling us that they would buy a trike if we made a cheaper one!And other people have told us they would buy a trike if it was easier to transport. Plus we have seen an increase in the number of people wanting to use trikes for occasional recreational riding, rather than long distance touring and everyday commuting for which the GTR and GTO were designed. So how do we satisfy this demand and introduce more people to the benefits of riding a trike?
Now it seems that many people like to drive to their favourite riding trail, unload their bike from their car, and then ride in peace and quiet away from the traffic. Thus it seems that the trike should be able to fit into the boot (trunk) of a car. So we used 16" wheels as we have done on the GTC and GTX to reduce the whole size of the trike. Plus people would not really want to spend 1/4 hour assembling a trike with the S&S couplings each time they went for a ride, thus we made the trike so could be FOLDED in 30 seconds.
Next, how do we reduce the cost?? Well a number of people told us they did not use all the 72 or 83 gears we normally fit for loaded touring in mountainous country, and this number of gear are not needed for recreational riding on Rail Trails, so we decided to fit 'only' 27 gears. As 80 % of riders fit our standard size frame, we elected to extend the size of the standard frame, and just make one frame size, at least for this year. We then examined the frame colours that people choose, and found that red and blue were the most popular, so we decided on offering just those two colours. Finally the trike had to be built much cheaper than we could do. So we arranged for our friends in Taiwan, with whom we had been talking to for a number of years, to assemble it on their production line, which does folding bikes and many other types in far greater numbers than we do, and hence at a much lower cost. In fact the GT3 costs only $2,950 AUD compared to $5,450 AUD for the Greenspeed GTO.

But does it have the same quality as other Greenspeed trikes? Here at Greenspeed we have a policy for only using other companies to out source work provided they can do a better job than we can, and at a lower price, which is what you would expect from experts, or there is no point to it. Of course we don't expect you to just take our word for it. So we have given GT3 road test trikes to a number of magazines for road testing, so that you can have a number independent reviews of the GT3 - see below.  Plus a large number of dealers are really excited about this trike, and have bought new GT3s themselves for their customers to road test. Thus we encourage you to go and try one yourself at a Greenspeed dealer - see GS Dealers.
O.K., so it is cheaper than other Greenspeeds, AND it folds. What other features does it have? Well, strangely enough, the smaller 16" wheels bring a number of benefits. The smaller wheels have enabled us to design a narrower trike which will fit through most door ways, and have an exceptional turning circle - see specifications, and BROL Road Test.  The smaller wheels are also both stronger and lighter that the 20" used on the GTO and GTR, thus with lighter weight and less inertia, the GT3 performs slightly better than either! Standard equipment includes the new Shimano Capreo rear hub, which has been specially designed for bikes with small wheels, and has a nine speed 9/26 cassette. This give a good range of 27 gears from 19 to 95 inches, with the standard Shimano Tiagra touring triple 52/42/30 chain wheel and crank set. For people who need more gears, the rear dropouts are designed to take the optional German Rohloff 14 speed rear hub, and the optional Swiss Schlumpf mountain-drive or speed-drive can also be fitted.
