| In 2004, Greenspeed entered the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix, 24 hour endurance race. We constructed a lightweight Chromoly frame with a fixed aluminum seat that we used foam for different rider heights. The fairing consisted entirely of Corflute that we "hot glued" together with corflute bulkheads to reinforce where needed. Mello did a great job with most of the fairing construction his work. This made for a quite light machine of 23kg. We also used a different front end to usual with 7 degrees of negative camber and 20 degrees of caster. The camber really helped to wear the tyres more evenly, because as the tyre is forced under the rim from hard cornering it ends up in just the right place! It also helps to use the tread in the center of the tyre to provide squirm free grip. The extra caster helps to lean the wheels into the corners for better cornering as well as provide better feedback to the rider on how much grip is available.
This trike, named Bezerk, in the hands of our riders completed the most number of laps in the 24 hours of racing to create a new record. The Wonthaggi course is only 1.4km in length, with several "testing" corners. Our trike seemed to stick like glue to the circuit and was definetely the fastest trike in the corners. We were not the fastest on the straights though, so our win was only by a small margin, pretty close for 24 hours of racing. RaceTime results here. Frame - Chromoly, mostly 0.035" wall thickness Wheels - Front are Fg/Al honeycomb with modified Sturmey Archer drums and Jalco rims, rear Velocity Aerohead rim, 24hl American Classic, Recon alloy 12-25 9spd cluster and butted spokes Riders - Scott Setford, Michael Clarkson, Paul Sims, Barry Cox, Owen Gerrard and Mello Robinson. |
