On March 19, 2005, Greenspeed entered the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix, 24 hour endurance race, we decided to go aero, with a beautifully constructed carbon/fibreglass Reflex fairing from D&H Enterprises. Don did a superb job of reducing the weight to 13kg for the whole fairing and also added an awesome head vent that kept the riders faces sweat free. We also decided to leave the normal wheel arches out of the usual design and place the wheels inside the shell to reduce wind drag further. Don got it built for us in record time, thanks Don :-) We went with a "twin rail" chassis to help get the seat low to the ground, less than 100mm off the asphalt! The track width ended up at 610mm, very narrow for my liking, but we gave it a go anyway. We moved the seat forward, down and extended the wheelbase from last years trike. We also moved the handlebars from underneath the seat to directly mounted to the twin rails to allow the seat to be just off the fairing floor. We used the same steering geometry as last year.

We built this trike in less than 3 weeks after receiving the fairing, with Barry and I up to 2am the morning of scrutineering!!! Paul N was the mainstay behind our building success, helping me every night that I stayed back to work on it, thanks mate!

This was an eventful race with the trike being rolled several times just in practise! Scott ended up being squeezed into the armco and over it in hour number three with it getting a couple of feet air and landing on its side! Scott remained injury free but the fairing needed some "race tape" The anti-fog ended up being a disaster, so around 2am we knocked the screen out and removed the tail. This was how it came across the line with several roll overs by the end. Considering the battering it received, it survived remarkably well.

We ended up fourth on the road. RaceTime results here.

Last year we were marked poorly for Design and Construction, but this year we won it, cool! This gave us overall honors for the event, sweeet!

This year was way too hectic, with no real testing time. The trike proved to be unstable in the corners for some of our less experienced riders, but still too much braking required to get it around the circuit. This has me all fueled up for 2006 ;-)
