Next in the tour is the gearing options. Brompton makes gearing choices easy and reliable to use. The number of gears is reflected in the model designation. For example, with the S-type handlebars and a 2 speed system, you have an S2 model. |

The single speed version (1) is great for the purists. It’s light, simple and great for the flat lands. Note that a chain tensioner is still used so that the chain stays taut during the fold. Two speeds (2) offer a low gear for ascending and starting and a higher gear for cruising. Based on the unique Brompton derailleur system and special rear free-hub, this is the best option for light weight and portability. Direct drive with near perfect chain alignment equals a crisp and efficient system. |
The speed version (3) is a popular choice for everyday cycling. Three well spaced gears encased in a lightweight alloy shell, this can only be the classic Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub! The gears are fully enclosed for reliability and changing gear couldn’t be simpler. If you have found 27 gears too confusing or found yourself using one shifter for most of your riding, you are going to love the 3 speed. |
The six speed version (6) is the combination of Sram’s very efficient hub gears with Brompton’s 2 speed derailleur system. This option gives six evenly spaced ratios. Control with the two triggers, shown above on P-type handlebars, is easy. With its low transmission losses, this multi-gear system is a great choice for touring and riding in hilly areas. |
