Brompton's gearing is kept strong and simple. For a general view on the gears, check out the gearing page of the model tour. We've added a popup Gear Chart for Brompton folding bikes so that you can have the figures in a seperate window.

The Brompton Lifestyle
Brompton bikes don't use the standard derailleur systems as they are vulnerable to damage, add alignment issues and are bulky which add size to the folding package. Instead they use a simple 2spd derailleur, 3spd hubs or a combination of the two.

Also on offer for the purist is the single speed option.

Cogs, as used on the rear wheel of the Brompton, are pretty much fixed. The 1 and 2spd systems use the 12t and 12/16t respectively. This gives a comfortable step between the starting/hill climbing gear and the cruising gear.

Optional mudguard The 3 and 6spd hubs use the 13t and 13/15t cogs respectively. The 13t is just right for the small wheel without needing to makethe front ring too large. The 13/15t cogs are designed to provide evenly spaced gears throughout the 6spd range. Where as the 12/16t used with a 3spd hub would duplicate gear sizes reducing you to effectively four gears.

Although most cog sizes have already been chosen for you, different ratio gears can be ordered, effectively making your whole gear range higher or lower.
