The Schlumpf Mountain Drive from Switzerland is an ingenius device that uses orbiting and planetary gears just like an internally geared hub to provide two very widely spaced gears between the cranks and the chainwheel. This means that you can double your Brompton's gear range.

The Brompton Lifestyle
The two gears are selected by knocking the button at the centre of the cranks. Push it to the right with your left foot and you are in the fixed 1 to 1 ratio. This will give you the tandard gear range that Brompton uses. Push it to the left with your right foot and you drop down into the low gear range. This is where the internal gears come into play to give you another set of gears lower than you had before.

Using the Schlumpf on a 3 or 6 speed Brompton should give you the gears to climb almost any hill. There is a bit of engineering work to fit the Schlumpf Drive to a bike. <- Previous

You can order the Schlumpf Drive as you order the bike, or you can order one to fit an existing bike. We hire the fitting tools out to the shops so that they can do the fitting in-house.

We've written up a gear Chart for Schlumpf fitted Brompton folding bikes to show how the range is expanded with the Schlumpf Drive. The chart is split into a high range which is the fitted gear on the drive (this also shows just what the bike would be like with out the drive), and low range showing the drop down gear range. You can also see that they flow into each other with no overlap. Next ->
